According to On3, Salt Lake City West edge rusher Takeshi Savery received a surprise scholarship offer from USC on Oct. 8 while previewing a planned visit to Oregon, putting two Big Ten programs into his early recruitment.

The timing gives USC an early test of whether it can disrupt Oregon’s recruiting momentum before Savery makes the trip. Savery has a busy game-day visit schedule, but the date of the Oregon visit and his other stops are not known.

Oregon beat USC 41-27 in Los Angeles on Sept. 26. USC is 5-1 and Oregon 3-1, and both play again Oct. 10: USC at Penn State and Oregon against UCLA.

USC and Oregon could turn the offer and visit into a recruiting battle, but the race is only beginning. Savery’s Oregon visit is the next known step.

01 · The Detail Beneath the HeadlineWhat Most People Are Missing

USC’s two-win edge in the 2026 standings is partly a scheduling edge: it has played six games to Oregon’s four. The longer comparison points the other way. Oregon finished 13-2 in 2025, four wins better and one loss fewer than USC’s 9-4, then opened 2026 at No. 13 in both preseason polls while USC was No. 19 in the AP poll and No. 17 in the coaches poll.

Josh Pate’s preseason bracket also placed Oregon sixth and left USC outside the field. For Savery’s recruitment, that makes the offer a bid from the team with more 2026 wins against a planned visit to the program with the stronger recent season and preseason standing. The raw records obscure that distinction.

02 · The Open QuestionsQuestions to Be Answered

1

When will Savery visit Oregon?

Oregon hosts UCLA on Oct. 10 and Nebraska on Oct. 17, plays at Illinois on Oct. 24 and hosts Northwestern on Oct. 31. Savery’s reported game-day travel over the next month makes the date more than a calendar detail: a confirmed itinerary will identify which matchup, if any, frames Oregon’s pitch and whether USC has another opening before or after the trip.

2

Which other schools are getting visits from Savery?

The known picture contains an Oregon trip and USC offer, but no named destinations from the rest of a busy game-day schedule. Those stops will determine whether the Big Ten pair is at the center of the recruitment or part of a broader field. The next school named on his itinerary is the clearest tell because no ranking or measurements establish the scale of the contest.
