South Carolina faces must-win test against No. 24 Kentucky
The 2-2 Gamecocks try to end a two-game skid against 3-1 Kentucky on Oct. 3 before traveling to Florida.

South Carolina hosts No. 24 Kentucky at 4:15 p.m. ET Saturday, Oct. 3, with a two-game skid and a widely circulated must-win label hanging over the 2-2 Gamecocks.
On3 reported that the game had been widely labeled a must-win for South Carolina. The Gamecocks opened 2-0, then lost 41-34 to Mississippi State on Sept. 19 and 49-18 at Alabama on Sept. 26. Kentucky brings a 3-1 record to South Carolina, including a 31-21 win at Texas A&M.
A loss would drop South Carolina to 2-3 and make its path back into the SEC race significantly harder after last season’s 4-8 finish, including a 1-7 conference record. The Gamecocks then travel to Florida on Oct. 10, leaving little room to absorb another setback.
The pressure is real, and South Carolina gets the game at home against a ranked SEC opponent.
01 · The Detail Beneath the HeadlineWhat Most People Are Missing
The common-opponent comparison makes Kentucky more imposing than its ranking alone suggests. The Wildcats’ 45-17 loss to Alabama on Sept. 12 was three points closer than South Carolina’s 49-18 loss there on Sept. 26, and Kentucky followed that defeat with a 31-21 road win at Texas A&M. South Carolina followed its 41-34 loss to Mississippi State with the Alabama defeat.
Oct. 3 is also one of only two home dates among South Carolina’s next four listed games. The Gamecocks travel to Florida on Oct. 10, host Tennessee on Oct. 24 and visit Oklahoma on Oct. 31. Losing the first home opportunity would put South Carolina at 0-3 in SEC play before that trip to Florida.
02 · The Open QuestionsQuestions to Be Answered
Can South Carolina reverse its scoring decline against Kentucky?
The Gamecocks’ point totals have fallen from 57 against Kent State to 45 against Towson, 34 against Mississippi State and 18 at Alabama. Kentucky allowed 21 in each of its wins over Texas A&M and South Alabama. South Carolina’s total on Oct. 3 will show whether that decline extends into a third SEC game, with the result setting the record taken to Florida on Oct. 10.
How much would beating Kentucky change South Carolina’s SEC path?
A victory would make South Carolina 3-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play, ending the two-game skid before the Oct. 10 trip to Florida. Tennessee follows on Oct. 24 and Oklahoma on Oct. 31, so Kentucky cannot settle the larger race. The Florida result will be the first tell on whether a win created momentum or merely interrupted the slide.
